Nant Mill Country Park - Picture Wrexham Borough County Borough Council

The Client

Nant Mill Country Park is one of seven country parks managed by Wrexham County Borough Council. The park’s visitor centre, a converted mill dating from 1832 houses the shop and children’s activities and is the ideal starting point for numerous walks.

The Council saw the opportunity to expand the centre’s facilities with the conversion of a disused shippon into a self-contained education room for schools.  Refurbishment was subject to securing the appropriate funding, which was obtained from Europe via the Welsh Assembly and from the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.

The Brief

To meet the terms of the funding, sustainability was a major priority of the refurbishment.  As far as possible, recycled materials were used and the building was insulated to a high standard.  To complete the brief, the most environmentally-friendly method of heating was required.  The system also had to be incorporated into the small, single-storey building which had no space for a boiler room or fuel storage.

Wrexham County Borough architects’ department considered a range of options, including solar panels, wind and ground-source heat systems.  However, the location of the building limited the choice.  There is no gas supply, the valley is sheltered from the wind, gets little sun and is very narrow, with insufficient space for a ground-source heating system.

The Solution

The architects chose an Ökofen boiler and Energy Box from Organic Energy.  Comprising a compact yet durable timber building, the Energy Box contains the complete heating system including boiler, pellet store, fuel supply system and flue.  The assembled unit was delivered to site ready for connection, craned into position next to the building and fully operational in a matter of hours.  The 8kW boiler provides low-cost low carbon heating to the refurbished building.
